It is possible that the early Catholic Church suppressed knowledge of aspects of the beginnings of Christianity that didn't fit its 'branding', and aggressively stamped out attempts at public discussion by burning as witches or heretics anyone holding contrary opinions. If this were indeed the case then it is entirely understandable that aggrieved parties would wish to preserve their understanding of the 'truth' in some way that would last for many centuries but which would not attract unwelcome attention from the Church.
